Ligularias and other plants that require moist soil (identified with an “*”
at end of description) can benefit from digging a hole 1 1/2—2 ft. wide and
12-18” deep with the bottom bowl shaped. Line the bottom 6-9 inches with plastic to
hold water, then fill with at least 50% humus and plant. Or, plant pot and all
in the ground in a large pot with the bottom lined with plastic and holes cut
into the side 1/2 way up.

Arisaema - Asian Jack in the Pulpits are gaining popularity with American gardeners for their ability to add a dramatic, exotic look to the shade garden. Some varieties have foliage to 5’ high and all have large clusters of bright orange-red berries in the fall. The flowers range from beautiful to bizarre, but all the varieties are fascinating and sure to attract attention. Plant Jacks in the shade or part shade about 5-6” deep in humus-rich, well-drained soil and mulch. If you plant them deeper, up to 10” and mulch heavily, you can grow varieties a zone warmer than you live in.

Variegated Yucca - One of my favorite garden plants for several reasons: They are evergreen, provide a striking architectural look and unique texture in the garden.
